Stella 2019, recently reviewed by Neal Martin as “very seductive” is intensely aromatic with layers of brambleberry, black currant and violet intertwined with more savoury notes such as cloves, white pepper and bay leaf. The palate is medium-bodied but intensely concentrated from the tip of the tongue through to the compelling finish that lingers. Perhaps due to the superlative texture provided by fine, grippy stem tannins or the insanesalinity that saturates. Either way, this wine disrupts the surface of the sensory organ and parts in such a way that it leaves a lasting impression.

Tasting Notes
Wine Making
The 2019 harvest was an extremely challenging one with high degrees of uncertainty. We hit a record low in production, going down by 40%, but we are confident about the quality of the vintage. Although we received enough rainfall during the growth season, we still felt the after-effects of the preceding four-year drought.
During bud break and flowering, we faced severe weather fluctuations, followed by cool windy conditions during fruit set, leading to the vines producing fewer bunches and smaller berries – which ironically, in terms of quality, was a great thing, because the stressed vines were able to ripen their smaller crop load optimally. In addition to that, the smaller the berries, the higher the skin to juice ratio, and the greater the concentration of flavour. For the extremely small 2019 vintage, we carefully preserved only 1372 bottles(5 x 225L French Barriques worth) of STELLA.
Winemaker's Note
The 2019 STELLA shows a considerable increase in stem integration with nearly 50% of the clusters fermenting whole-bunch. The dry conditions leading up to the vintage permitted for the stems to ripen optimally, allowing us to use this stylistic tool in the cellar that lifts the nose and provides a crunchy palate. In addition to the whole-cluster fermentation, we also added a small splash of Viognier grapes to the fermenting Syrah, which resulted in this wine’s deep ruby colour.
