Beau Constantia Pas De Nom Creative Batch Wine 2021. Stella 2019, recently reviewed by Neal Martin as “very seductive” is intensely aromatic with layers of brambleberry, black currant and violet intertwined with more savoury notes such as cloves, white pepper and bay leaf. The palate is medium-bodied but intensely concentrated from the tip of the tongue through to the compelling finish that lingers. Perhaps due to the superlative texture provided by fine, grippy stem tannins or the insanesalinity that saturates. Either way, this wine disrupts the surface of the sensory organ and parts in such a way that it leaves a lasting impression.

Tasting Notes

If you are not used to drinking skin-fermented white wines, expect the unexpected! Apart from its unique amber hue, the Creative Batch also sports an aroma profile that might make you think twice about what’s in the glass! At first, the senses are met by confident aromas of citrus and clove, relieved by layers of ginger and lemongrass, and once given the opportunity to breathe, a savory complexity that awes. On the palate, the Creative Batch possesses a certain amount of kinetic energy. Its wonderful salinity is intensified by a concentration of citrus zest, and hints of beeswax play well with the skin born
tannic grip and tangy finish.

Wine Making

The PAS DE NOM CREATIVE BATCH is an atypical character that was born during unconventional times. A blend of Chenin Blanc, Roussanne, Verdelho, Chardonnay, Viognier and Clairette Blanche, entirely fermented on the skins in concrete. Once fermentation was complete, skins were pressed and the wine was sent back to mature on its gross fermentation lees for 8 months prior to being bottled.

Winemaker's Note

The 2020 vintage will forever be remembered as a measurement of our willingness to adapt as well as a measurement of our strength as a team – a collective set of hands working towards the same goal. With the above-mentioned varieties sourced from parcels all over the greater Western Cape, the 2020 Creative Batch became an all-encompassing package containing the works of many growers from all corners of our industry. Hence the closure reading “#SAVESAWINE”, a campaign created in support and aid of the livelihoods dependent on our South African wine industry.
